Civilian Missions
Liberal Peace
It is a contested theory and practice under which conflict management has been undertaken since the 1990s. It has been based on the goals of liberal reform of the state and the economy of countries in conflict under liberal values. It has suffered many transformations. As we explored in this research, liberal peace seems to be now disappearing or taking a much different form from earlier times.
Military Missions
(according to the terminology given in this project to the missions nature, depending on missions mandates): those that notwithstanding the broader political goals have a mandate authorising the use of force. Those that have a peace-enforcement mandate beyond peacekeeping have been noted on the map.
Military Peace
Is the name this project gives to the form peacebuilding is taking since the 2010s, implying its increasing focus on peace enforcement and on building the military capacity of states in conflict.
Peacekeeping
the deployment of military personnel to help maintain or restore international peace and security in conflicts under strict adherence to the principle of impartiality and use of force only in self-defence.
Peacebuilding
collective undertaking towards the consolidation of peace after conflict, based on the goal of good governance.
Stabilisation
It is the term included in many UN missions since 2010. It draws from military practice and has to do with prioritising the military victory of states over armed groups as well as pushing forward the goals of statebuilding, generally, towards the possibility of withdrawing the mission.
Statebuilding
The practice of state reform undertaken as part of (and the main goal since approximately the 2000s) peacebuilding. It generally includes democratisation, security sector reform, government and public administration reform.
